The Starr revolver was a revolutionary design well ahead of its
time. Named after its inventor, Ebanezer Townsend Starr, the Starr
percussion revolver featured a unique trigger which, unlike the
double action revolvers designed much later, only served to rotate
the cylinder and cock the hammer. Once this was accomplished, the
trigger pressed a second actuator located at the rear of the trigger
guard - thereby cocking and firing the revolver with a single pull
of the trigger.
The Starr double action (or 'self-cocking') revolver also featured a
then unique hinged frame which permitted the cylinder to be changed,
made fitting percussion caps easier, and also facilitated cleaning.
Though the Starr revolvers were second only to the Remington New
Model and Colt percussion revolvers in total number purchased by the
U.S. military, its high production cost forced its inventor to
produce a simplified single action model in 1863 and led to the
Binghampton, NY-based firm's closure soon after the end of the U.S.
Civil War and the resulting drop in demand for military sidearms.
Superb though Eban Starr's revolvers were he could not compete with
the likes of Colt, Remington, and Smith & Wesson.
Pietta's Starr Model 1858 Double Action revolvers are faithful
reproductions of the originals, incorporating the increased safety
of modern metallurgy, the unmatched consistency of computer
controlled precision machining, and the irreplaceable old world
craftsmanship of fitting and finishing every revolver by hand. We
are proud to present the revolver which breathes new life into this
innovative and historical design.
